Keeping your child safe
Safety regulations and how these keep your child safe when wearing Marni Makes
Since starting Marni Makes, I have studied endlessly researching regulations and the safety of the clothes that are handmade by myself. I have recently made changes to reflect these regulations so they are safe for your babies, as detailed below.
Fabric:
Fabric used is OEKO-TEX standard 100 certified. Which means this has been tested and free from harmful toxic substances making it suitable for childrens clothing.
Fabrics used at Marni Makes are:
95% Cotton Jersey & 5% Elastane
95% Polyester & 5% Elastane
100% Cotton (for open back dresses)
Thread:
Thread used for both sewing machine and overlocker are Coats Moon Threads which is 100% polyester and this is also OEKO-TEX standard 100 certified.
Cords & Drawstrings:
No cords or drawstrings are used at Marni Makes. Elastic is used and sewn into leggings and dresses.
Sewing Processes:
Pins are not used for sewing, instead clips are used to eliminate the risk of pins being left in clothes.
Snaps:
Snaps used are KAM snaps 12.4MM. These snaps have been tested to a pulling force of 79N. The regulations, resistant to pulling, set out that any stud/press fastener over 6MM should have a minimal removal force of 70N.
Labelling:
Each item of clothing is labelled with fire safety labels that state KEEP AWAY FROM FIRE in red writing. The labels also states washing instructions on, fabric composition and that the said item is handmade in the UK. On top of the care/fire safety label, is a size label. Both are placed in the inside waist seam of clothing. See below for an example of labelling.
Fire Safety:
Fabrics have not undergone fire testing nor are treated with a flame retardant. Fire safety labels that state KEEP AWAY FROM FIRE in red writing are sewn into ALL clothing. Hats/headbands do not require a fire safety label and is optional to put one in. In daywear, birth to 3 months require a fire safety label, over 3 months, again is optional to add one in, however all clothing items I make come with a safety label sewn in. All items made are to be worn during the day omly. Due to fabric not being treated with a flame resistant coating, any clothing made are NOT suitable for nighttime and strictly to be worn daytime only.
Quality Control:
All items are checked for quality control prior to sending out to customers, by myself. I check for any clips which may still be inside garments, holes, loose threads and check that snaps are correctly installed on each garment.
Regulations:
- The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 - covering ALL products
- The Nightwear Safety Regulations 1985
- PD CEN/TR 16792:2014 Safety of children's clothing - Recommendations for the design and manufacture of children's clothing - Mechanical safety
-
BS EN 14682: 2014 - Cords & Drawstrings on childrens clothing
Pets:
As I manage my business from home, I do have pets. All items are lint rolled prior to dispatching, however no pets have access to my sewing room.
Smoking:
Items are made in a non smoking environment, nor do anyone who comes into contact with the items I make, smoke.
